Known for his soul-stirring voice and iconic compositions, Smallwood left an indelible mark on the genre.Born on November 30, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia, Smallwood grew up in a musical family and began playing piano by ear at just five years old.

He later graduated cum laude from Howard University with a degree in music, where he was a member of the university’s first gospel group, The Celestials.

His compositions blended classical precision with soulful gospel rhythms, earning him eight Grammy nominations and numerous awards.In 1977, Smallwood founded The Richard Smallwood Singers, a group that brought a contemporary sound to traditional gospel music.
